In 798, following recommendations by emperor Charles-magne, pope Leo III promoted the Salzburg bishop Arno to archbishop. Salzburg celebrated the 1200th anniversary of this event by establishing the Arno Trail.

The circular trail not only traces church history but connects a host of scenic attractions of SalzburgerLand - impressive gorges, mountain peaks with breathtaking views and points of historical interest. The Arno Trail follows mainly existing alpine paths and long distance trails built and maintained over the years by alpine clubs.
